Clearwater Lake is an excellent fishing lake. Some of the more popular species to fish are: Bluegill & sunfish, catfish, largemouth, white bass, spotted bass, carp, and crappie. Walleye are not found in Clearwater but, below the dam in the Black River they can be found in nice numbers.
A good reason to fish Clearwater is due to the fact that there is no closed season on any species of fish at Clearwater Lake which anglers find appealing for year round sport.
Water temperatures and conditions of Clearwater Lake vary during the year. From January toMarch the average is 43 degrees. From April through June when crappie fishing is popular due to spawning it rises to about 66 degrees. July - September the average reaches its highest peak at 88 degrees with good bass fishing at night in the deeper waters. The mid fall from October - December it begins dropping to around 55 degrees with the fish feeding in the shallow waters.
Fish shelters are placed in various locations throughout the lake. Check the Fish Shelter Map locations or the Topographic Map for structure and channels

Swimming
Webb Creek, Bluff View, and Piedmont Park all have designated swim beaches. These are perfect places to cool off on a hot summer day. Day use fees are charged for use of the swim beaches. You may pay one dollar per person, up to a four-dollar maximum per carload, or purchase an annual day use pass.
Swimmers are reminded to –
- Swim and wade only where they are familiar with the water depths and the bottom;
- Swim in the company of others;
- Avoid diving;
- Be careful of overestimating your swimming ability because water distances are deceiving;
- Watch children closely;
- Avoid boat channels, launching ramps and docks;
- Remember horseplay in the water can result in injuries.
Picnicing
Picnicking facilities are available in all the parks. Many are located near playgrounds and swim beaches. Family gatherings are held year after year in our group shelters. These shelters have electricity and grills. A few even have covered stone fireplaces. These shelters can be reserved through the National Recreation Reservation Service.
Hiking
There are several hiking trails located on the Clearwater Lake Project. These trails provide scenic views and the chance to see a large variety of wildlife. Deer, squirrel, and turkey are just a few of the types of animals that can be found along the forested trails.
